Will wants to know: "Why do they call you Yozzer?" | |
Simon & James said: |
S: Yozzer is a Lancastrian nickname for Hughes, and in the 1970's there was a Lancashire captain called David Hughes who was known as Yozzer. Every Hughes in cricket or football for that matter, tends to be nicknamed Yozzer. There was also the famous Yozzer Hughes in 'Boys from the black stuff', who famously said, 'Give us a job'. Luckily I've got one! |

Frank wants to know: "Who do you think is England's best strike bowler?" |
Simon & James said: |
J: Steve Harmison after his performances in the West Indies has emerged as England's best bowler, and has the potential to be a great fast bowler. S: For me, he is the most explosive fast bowler England have had since Bob Willis. |
David wants to know: "Is the young talent coming through the ranks in this country?" |
Simon & James said: |
S: Yes, definitely. There is a queue of very good young batsmen, for instance, Andrew Strauss of Middlesex who will probably make his test debut tomorrow. Ian Bell of Warwickshire has been playing well and there are several good fast bowlers including Sajid Mahmood from Lancashire. Unfortunately no spinners have yet emerged. |
Mary wants to know: "Did you used to play pranks on your team mates when you were playing and if so what did you do?" |
Simon & James said: |
S: Against Notts, Angus Fraser put a condom over my bat handle which I didn't notice until I got to the middle. Then I handed it to Umpire Dickie Bird, but the lubricant was still on the bat handle, it slipped out of my hand and I was out immediately. We lost the match and Fraser was lynched by the captain. |
Lisa wants to know: "What do you think of England's chances in the forthcoming series against New Zealand?" |
Simon & James said: |
J: I think it'll be a close series and I'm backing England to win it. New Zealand are a much better side than West Indies and a lot will depend on our fast bowler staying fit. You can follow all the cricket news on Teletext on Channel 4, page 160, both on analogue and digital TV sets. |
Nicky wants to know: "Who is the greatest cricketer ever?" |
Simon & James said: |
S: In the modern era Viv Richards, because he is the only batsman I've ever seen toy with a test bowler as if he were a clubbie. He had an aura about him which, as a bowler, made your legs turn to jelly. He was also an incredible fielder and handy bowler. J: Very difficult having never seen Bradman, who achieved so much as a captain and as a batsman, but the player I've enjoyed watching most is Shane Warne. |
Bernie wants to know: "Have you ever made any gaffes on air - such as the famous 'The batsmen's Holding, the bowler's Willie'?!" |
Simon & James said: |
S: Thankfully no. Though I have said some stupid things, such as 'Obviously Mark Nicholas is celebrating the fact that it is Tom Cruise's birthday', when he dressed in a black jacket and white t-shirt. And also, when I once compared Ashley Giles to Shane Warne. |
Warren wants to know: "Who was the most fearsome bowler that you faced?" |
Simon & James said: |
S: Sylvester Clarke who played for Surrey in the 1980's and hit on the head virtually every batsman in the game with vicious in-swinging bouncers. Facing him was the first time that I realised that adrenaline is brown. |
Helen wants to know: "Do you like the new technology that they have introduced into cricket?" |
Simon & James said: |
J: Yes. Devices such as Hawkeye have changed the way we watch the game, and make certain skills much more accessible to the television viewer. S: Watch out for Channel 4's new 1000 frames per second slow motion camera that will be in action this year. |
Kevin wants to know: "Why isn't there more county cricket on the TV?" |
Simon & James said: |
J: There is a fair bit of one day county cricket on TV, so viewers can keep in touch with their local team and they can also follow their county on Teletext on Channel 4, page 160. S: This Teletext service is a great innovation for the reputed 6,000,000 people who are interested in county cricket. |
Dawn wants to know: "What do you feel the reasons are for England doing so well against the West Indies in the test matches but yet so poorly in the one dayers - do you think we can cut it with the worlds elite when it comes to a one day match? " |
Simon & James said: |
S: We are still inexperienced in 50-over one day cricket because we don't play enough of it domestically or internationally. Sachin Tendulkar has played over 300 one day internationals, whereas no current England player has played half that many. (Excluding Darren Gough) |
seamer wants to know: "Who do you think is the best commentator on TV/radio apart from yourself of course?" |
Simon & James said: |
S: Michael Atherton, who is a better commentator than he was player, but I don't know if that says more about his batting or his commentating. |
Sam wants to know: "Can you get the new teletext cricket update service on mobile phones?" |
Simon & James said: |
J: Yes. Send the word CRICKET to 8398 and for all the latest England team news send CNEWS to 8398. Each message will cost no more than 25p. |
Gary wants to know: "Do you think some of the recent success of the England team overseas is down to the support of the Barmy Army?" |
Simon & James said: |
J: I'm sure it can't do any harm. Looking at pictures of the West Indies series in the Caribbean it seemed that England had far more support than the home team. |
Dave wants to know: "I have sampled all atmospheres in cricket grounds from Lords to the Caribbean - do you prefer the traditional and muted down game in England or the more vibrant and loud atmosphere abroad? " |
Simon & James said: |
S: Both. Each is appropriate in it's environment. Chikki's disco wouldn't work at Lords, but it's great in Antigua, and there is a real buzz at test matches in England, particularly at Edgbaston, Headingley and Trent Bridge. |
Dazzler wants to know: "Do you think the England selectors have been biased against Glamorgan in the past? Surely Matthew Maynard should have played more tests?" |
Simon & James said: |
J: No, not in the recent past. Good player though he is, Maynard had a few chances and didn't take them. He didn't help himself by going to South Africa. |
dave wants to know: "Why are there so many spelling mistakes on Teletext's cricket coverage?" |
Simon & James said: |
J: We do our best to keep them to a minimum. I'll have words in the office! Because we're so up to date with the news, we have to get the stories up as quick as possible and sometimes errors occur! |
Silly Mid Off wants to know: "Any plans to write another book Yozzer? Loved the last one. What revelations have you still got to spill?" |
Simon & James said: |
S: Loads from working with the great, the good and the ghastly in both newspapers and TV. A new book will be out following Englands pursuit of the Ashes in 2005. |
WG Grace wants to know: "What is your favourite test ground in England and why?" |
Simon & James said: |
J: Trent Bridge is where I saw my first days test cricket, Ian Botham's debut. I'm also a Notts supporter, which isn't easy. S: Lords, because it was my home as a player, the ground is magnificant, you always run into old friends and the slope makes for interesting cricket. |
Simon wants to know: "What was it like playing with Mike Gatting? Is it true that he has the strongest handshake in cricket?" |
Simon & James said: |
S: Very noisy and smelly and there was never any food left. I had the misfortune of playing against him on Sunday and he's still an awesome player. And yes, your fingers take a while to get their circulation back after he's shaken your hand. |
Nigel wants to know: "Do you think Freddy Flintoff can become the next Ian Botham?" |
Simon & James said: |
J: He's a fantastic player, but I think searching for another Ian Botham is a dangerous Red Herring, because there won't be another. S: Flintoff has Botham's charisma but Botham scored 14 test centuries and took 383 test wickets. |
Nelson wants to know: "How do you keep yourself amused when you are stuck in the field all day?" |
Simon & James said: |
S: It was great being on the boundary, because there's always someone to talk to in the crowd, unless you're playing at Derby! |
Sticky wicket wants to know: "Would you ever be tempted to turn your hand to umpiring?" |
Simon & James said: |
S: No, because it's an impossible job and I'd be no good at it. |
Graham wants to know: "How do you rate this NZ side?" |
Simon & James said: |
J: A very tough, well-balanced team with a fine captain in Stephen Fleming. England will have to play at the top of their game to beat them. |
The Dude wants to know: "If England could either win the Ashes or the World Cup what would you pick?" |
Simon & James said: |
J: Impossible question. But I'd rather see them win the Ashes if I had to choose. S: Definitely the Ashes, because we don't need football to be any more dominant in this country than it already is. |
Amanda wants to know: "When is the next Ashes tour? " |
Simon & James said: |
J: Next summer. Keep in touch with all the cricket news on Teletext on Channel 4, page 160. |
